Over the past ten years at least, there have been quite the amount of worship songs that include lines like.
“Running waters dance, You and I romance”
“Your fragrance is intoxicating”
“Heaven meets earth like a…”
While these songs sound great and make you feel good. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are. In fact, they are probably inflicting a lower view of God into your theology and setting up an image of God that not only does not exist but that you are creating for your own pleasure. Kinda scary. Matt Redman has some great comments on songs like this in this clip.
A High View of God
You see God is not your boyfriend. Whenever we create God to be something other than who God said He was in his word we are in danger of idol worship. I know what you’re thinking, “It’s not tv or shopping. I’m thinking about God and my relationship with him”. That’s exactly what Israelites thought in the wilderness. They thought they were worshipping God. So what was their problem? They created a God of their own imagination. One that made them feel good and it was a sin. (Romans 1:18-25)
Take a look at some excerpts from Isaiah 40:12-16. I love this scripture. It shows just a how mighty a God we have and while he comes near to us He is also to be feared.
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, Measured heaven with a span And calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales And the hills in a balance? 13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has taught Him? 14 With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, And taught Him in the path of justice? Who taught Him knowledge, And showed Him the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, And are counted as the small dust on the scales; Look, He lifts up the isles as a very little thing. …. 18 To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him? 23 He brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth useless. … 25 “To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing.
You see, scriptures in Song of Solomon and revelation that talk of marriage point to Christ and the church. Not individual marriage relationships. It’s a picture and a symbol which even Paul says is a mystery (Ephesians 5:31-33). This relationship is not to be brought down to human understanding. Our understanding of God should be brought up to the word of God.
If you are single or experiencing loneliness God is with you and He is near to the brokenhearted. I’ve been there and it’s painful. The answer is not seeing God as your boyfriend but lifting Him high. Let His words comfort you through His word. Know that He has a plan for you and that he will not leave you comfortless (John 14:18)
